Storm Water AbatementThe second major project to control the onrush of contaminated stormwater is now underway.
Landowners and the Town of Waterford have agreed to allow the construction of ravine improvements, sediment traps, and settling basins on their properties and road right of ways in the surrounding area of Island View Bay. The WWMD appreciates the spirit of cooperation shown by all of the participating parties. Without their help this important project would not be possible.
C.W. Purpero, of Oak Creek, was the lowest bidder for construction. They are well qualified and experienced in this type of work. Costs are within the budget established at the annual meeting. Natural rock and native grasses are a major part of the filtration system that will be used to help clean up the runoff. Crews are scheduled to start in late September with preliminary clearing of shrubbery and dead trees. Look for action along Wood Drive and North River Bay Road. We all look forward to an attractive and effective completion of this project.
Rain Garden Grant Program
All of the grant recipients have reviewed the locations and size of the rain gardens, and we are set to go with excavation and preparation of the planting beds. Individual owners will select various types of natural plants and native grass species that will enhance their landscape. Prairie Tree Landscaping, Elkhorn, will do the work on all sites. This pilot program will help further our District’s efforts to filter stormwater that runs into the waterway. Look for news of an expanded program next year and give some thought to joining in this cost-supported program. Think green…and yellow, and red, and beautify your yard.
History Committee
WANTED! Photos and stories of the past history of unheated cabins, cottage life, fishing shanties, and good times in the old days along the Fox River and Tichigan Lake. On Saturday, September 27, Jean Lewis, chairperson of the District’s History Committee hosted a gathering of interested folks at the Waterford Library. We’re looking for any type of memorabilia from the early times in, on and around the waterway. We need copies of your family’s relics and recollections that will help us tell a story that future generations can enjoy. If you are a writer or conservator, your help would be appreciated in developing this exciting story of the past. Everyone is welcome.
